The patriots’ gold is in severe danger because the authoritarian Geraldine and her mate Larkins, the secret envoys who have been entrusted with its guard, are veritable masters in the art of deception. Treachery and mysteries accompany Mark’s mission, up to the violent final battle in which the coffer with the gold is made to fall in the right hands. But another danger looms on the horizon: the Algonquians, allied with the English, are on a war footing and the Tundar outpost is threatened by their arrows. The performances of a wandering entertainer and the incursions of the Native Americans seem to proceed at the same rate; is there a link between the Great Reginald, the actor who takes Shakespeare’s word into the villages of the American forests, and the Algonquian attacks?
