Magico Vento has to deal with an emergency in the heart of indian territory, in the Badlands, desolate blighted lands inhabited only by “outcasts” (indians expelled from their tribes) and poverty-stricken families displaced following the white miners’ invasion of the Black Hills. A fierce band of Shoshones has penetrated into the area with the intention of capturing some of the Sioux as prisoners. They intend to hand them over to General Crook so as to make a favorable impression on him, as part of their general plan to join the army as support troops and make a name for themselves as more reliable and determined allies than the Crows. As he explores the Badlands to gather together the scattered Sioux and help them to ward off the attack, Magico Vento makes the acquaintance of numerous curious individuals, forced into exile or who have gone into voluntary exile for the most disparate reasons: isolated figures struggling on their own with only a handful of weapons and scanty means of subsistence, men and women who know no rule or discipline, but accustomed to surviving whatever the cost. But the Shoshones are extremely warlike and ten times more numerous than them…
